In looking at the Hot searches on Google today, Thanksgiving Eve, 2011 we find #1 – Thanksgiving. Thank God! Glad it is not yet Christmas (or something scary).

Number 2 however is someone I have never heard of (mind you I do not have TV. Just Netflix. And a VCR/DVD Deck.) Yes a VCR. To many of you it’s right up there with the phone my 9-year-old saw in a thrift shop this past weekend. It was pretty old-fashioned even to my standards – ornate, fancy handle, on a pedestal. She picked up the receiver, that was familiar enough and said “mom, how do you dial it?” It was a rotary dial of course…. But she does math online, can adeptly search for horse videos and 12-year-olds seeing how fast they can sing the “50 Nifty United States” on YouTube. And do more on my cell phone than I can… she simply can’t understand a rotary telephone.

Anyhoo – Number 2, yes, I had to Google it adding to the count.. Oh poop, DWTS. See, no TV.

Number 3 Kyle Orton, no clue. Maybe he’s number two on DWTS? Ah, football player. I like football but don’t watch it much seeing as… I don’t have TV.

And number 4 is the same as number 2 – “dancing with the stars winner.”

So the list continues with people I don’t know and then gets back to number one, with pecan pie, sweet potatoes and green bean casserole. Now that I understand, it’s that time of year for which we do not need TV, except the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and… football.

grand pianos

I was fortunate to make a visit to Langlois Pianos in East Bremerton.  5959 State Highway 303 NE, Suite 101, Bremerton Wa. to be exact.  Langlois Pianos, in business since 1865, is the oldest family-run business in the state of Washington. Ira Langlois III continues his family tradition of making custom hand made Grand Pianos and Upright Pianos.

piano store

In addition to custom hand made Langlois Pianos he also sells Kawai,  Perzina, and others, plus he has an impressive selection of grade “A”  used pianos.

This is a gorgeous Samick Millennium Revolution Grand Piano in showroom condition with a Bubinga polish finish that completely captured my eye. What a beauty!!

Ira playing piano

Here is Ira tickling the old ivories for me on a Langlois Piano.  The sound was captivating with richness and fullness. For a description of what goes into the production of a hand made Langlois Piano go to this link on Ira’s web site.

Check out this utube video of  Marina Lashkul playing a Langlois Piano. This can give you an idea of the sound of a Langlois Piano and also a brief introduction to Marina’s beautiful playing.

Langlois Pianos carries the widest selection of sheet music and instructional materials/books in the region.  I was amazed at the variety and breadth of the selection of books Ira presents.

So next time you are in East Bremerton, or want to schedule a visit, Ira would love to help you in your search for “the perfect piano for you”.  His family history is quite extensive and an asset to our local area and lore.  Or if you are simply in the mood for some new sheet music or music instruction he is definitely the man to see.

On the Summer Solstice this year Mother Nature gave us the most incredible whole day of gorgeous summer weather.  The Port of Kingston Marina was fantastic with Mount Rainier shining in the background.  Even the commuters unloading from the ferry were strolling, not hurrying.

DSCN2688

This sign in this summer weather probably made golfers long to be on the golf course.  That Kingston Rotary event must have done quite well with a large turnout.  The White Horse Golf Club is beautiful and offers a  free Edmonds/Kingston Golf Shuttle for golfers coming from the other side of Puget Sound.  The Pro Shop is open seven days a week and you can reserve your tee times online.

DSCN2689

These beautiful periwinkle colored flowers are in the planter at the Port of Kingston Marina.  Does anyone know what they are?

DSCN2700

The  Fishing Pier at Jefferson Beach outside of Kingston was another place to capture the shining Mount Rainier on the solstice.

DSCN2707

These flowers seemed to be an exuberant expression of summer.

Indianola Wa pier and beach at low tide.  This is a public fishing pier, a dive spot to an underwater wreck,  and a great beach to walk children and dogs, plus it has a long history for being a desirable place to dock all kinds of boats.

DSCN2470

The tide flats are prominent in this very minus tide.

Looking across Agate Pass Bridge with Bainbridge Island on the left.

DSCN2479

Here are some fun stairs to the beach.  Imagine packing picnic supplies or beach toys up and down.  Whew!

DSCN2495

Here is an old and very worn rope swing.  It is easy to imagine all the fun this worn out swing has seen in better days!

DSCN2488

This house on the beach is so fascinating because it is RIGHT THERE on the beach.  No one is allowed to build like that anymore.  Can you imagine the thrill of being in this house during one of our winter storms?  It would truly be dramatic.

DSCN2498

Looking out across the very long pier is rather amazing.  A great place to take kids and do a little fishing.

DSCN2509

Looking back from the pier at the little town of Indianola.  The famous Indianola Country Store is just on the left after one exits off the pier. This little store is an active neighborhood hangout which serves sandwiches, snacks and carries an excellent array of merchandise to save residents a trip to a neighboring town such as Kingston or Poulsbo. The owners are friendly and offer great service.  Fun to get a coffee and walk the beach.

DSCN2478

Fantastic fun play day for dogs on the beach.  Life doesn’t get much better than this!

DSCN2345

Access to the Wilderness Park Trail  is across the street from North Kitsap High School on Caldart, or behind Viking Bank on Hwy. 305.  This incredibly lovely 11.56 acre park is right in the heart of Poulsbo,  but leaves behind concrete sidewalks and honking cars. It is a rugged dirt trail, a regular hiking trail, that makes good walking shoes or boots important.  At this time of year please keep in mind the “mud” factor, because it definitely is a little sloggy.

DSCN2343

DSCN2341

I personally like to park at St. Olaf’s Church and walk across the little bridge toward the east to access the trail head.  I believe I am just enchanted by this little bridge plus I enjoy the grassy walk before heading into the woods.

DSCN2353

Immediately one is transported into a wonderful woods with the city left behind.

DSCN2359

DSCN2360

Dog Fish Creek flows alongside a lot of the trail and birds abound.

At several places small bridges have been placed over the creek.DSCN2372.

DSCN2366

This large tree was uprooted this winter in one of our wind storms.  It does not impede upon the trail however, just adding more texture to this rich environment.  Spring will be arriving soon and this park will burst forth with wild flowers and more birds, all for us to enjoy!

DSCN1960

Yet another gorgeous, sunny day in Port Gamble.  This time we visited the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion.  What a fantastic site for a wedding or reception.  Just last year it was the tent pavilion so this is quite an improvement.  I believe the new pavilion holds approximately 200 guests with an adjacent tented patio.  With windows on all sides plus french doors, the pavilion affords a breathtaking panoramic view.  So with the Hood Canal view, Hood Canal bridge, wonderful expansive lawn, rose garden, slated patio, and 20 foot tall stone fireplace, this is the place to have the reception of your dreams.

DSCN1965

Another view showing the older tent pavilion and the new pavilion.

DSCN1969

Just up the street is the historic Buena Vista Cemetery.  Not only is the view absolutely spectacular, but the history on the tombstones is beyond fascinating.  After spending quite some time reading them, we walked down the hill for a latte and a bite of barbecue.  Yum!

garden

While enjoying some time in Raab Park stroll over and check out the P-Patch Community Garden. This is a wonderful little garden, but be sure and don’t pick any produce!  The little plots are rented out and tended by the community, and I have noticed some plots produce several seasons.  This is an especially good time to visit because so many flowers are blooming and their produce is maturing.

The Youth Garden is especially delightful and playful.  Looks like they have had fun gardening this summer.

While  summer reading time is officially over, a good way to spend a rainy day is inside the Kitsap Regional Library in Poulsbo Wa.  It is a well stocked delightful little library, plus the librarians are quite helpful.  I walked out with more than I expected to take home.  The books, cds, dvds, and magazines all have reasonable check out times and can be returned at any branch.  Although small, the library is part of the whole Kitsap Regional system thus thousands of books and other materials are available and can be ordered from their computer system.
